I LEARNT TO DIVE IN SHARM & HAD A GREAT TIME!

It was nearly 3 years ago I found myself uprooted from the UK and in Sharm. My partner knew the manager of a dive centre called Colona Divers, (situated in Hadaba, between Old Market and Naama Bay), who had offered me a job on the dive centre counter. Knowing absolutely nothing about diving, (I didn’t even know what a BCD was let alone what it stood for!) I was keen to start learning so literally days after beginning my new job, the manager had me on a PADI Open Water course in order for me to be able to relate to and understand the clients. Well that was 3 years ago and I am now a Rescue Diver with a few hundred dives and a couple of specialities under my belt… I spent 2 years on the counter in Colona and loved every minute of it, they were and still are my Sharm family.
Throughout all of my courses and witnessing others taking there’s, what I really picked up on was how fantastic the Red Sea is to begin diving in. The visibility is out of this world all year round, even during the seasons when it isn’t as good as other months (don’t get me wrong, it is still fantastic when the vis is “poor”), the reason for it being less clear is because of the plankton in the water but the plankton brings whalesharks, eagle rays and manta rays so no would dare complain!
I think of all of my courses, the one that stood out the most for me was my Rescue Diver course. Having spent a day going through the theory, you can imagine my delight when my instructor loaded up his pick up with tanks, diving equipment, some lead, some oxygen, a BBQ and a cool box stacked with meats and soft drinks and drove us into the Ras Mohammed National Park to the beach line of the famous dive site of Marsa Bareika. The water was crystal clear and about 32oC and the air temperarure 40oC so we found ourselves some shade, pitched up camp and this was to be our classroom for the day!
Following a busy morning of completing a variety of lifts and skills we retired to our shade to enjoy a BBQ! It was during the afternoon skills session that we were joined in the water by 3 inquisitive tiger sharks!
By the end of the day I was a very chuffed Rescue Diver!
To be honest, although this was my favourite, all the other courses I have taken come in at a close 2nd since they were all fantastic!!
